Sun 9 Aug Two days after the bombing of American Embasies in Nairobi and Dar Es Salam, I left Phoenix on a British Air 747-400. I'd never flown on a 747 before. As we rolled down the runway I thought, "Okay, we'll lift off now," but we kept rolling down the runway. Then I thought again, "Now we'll take off," but we kept rolling down the runway. Finally we took off. It's one big plane! Here's a shot of one at the San Diego airport next to a lesser airplane. The plane was nearly empty, so I had three seats to myself. I thought I was in seventh heaven because I could stretch out to sleep--until I looked across the isle at another passenger sleeping on four seats. The flight took ten hours, but I was able to sleep through most of it because we left at 9:50pm. Mon 10 Aug Arriving in London, I took the Gatwick Express to Victoria Station, walked around Buckingham Palace, St James park, and Parliment Square before catching the Gatwick Express back. I had no idea where I was going in London, but I got lucky and caught all trains about five minutes before departure, and I made all the right turns to find all the sights.
Tue 11 Aug The flight from London to Nairobi took eight hours aboard another 747-400. This flight was much more crowded than the Phoenix-London flight, but there was still an empty seat next to me. Upon arriving at JKIA (Jomo Kenyatta International Airport), I was amazed that I breezed thru customs in light of recent events and the fact that I had a UPS in my luggage. Anyway, I relaxed most of the day until I had a beer (Tusker Premium) and passed out at about 7:30pm local. Either the beer was really strong, or I was majorly jet lagged. |
